As kids many of us would have a banana in our morning cereal or in our lunch bag. You may not know it, but that naturally packaged fruit is the most widely consumed in the world. Bananas are unique in terms of their carbohydrate and sugar contents. Containing approximately 15 grams of sugar, they nevertheless have a low glycemic index value. GI measures the impact of a food on blood sugar.

The banana, often dismissed as being too high in sugar, surprisingly has very good digestion-friendly benefits. Dan Koeppel, author of The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World, traces the banana back to the Garden of Eden. One medium banana contains 110 calories, 30 grams of carb and one gram of protein, plus vitamin B6, manganese, vitamin C, fiber, potassium, biotin and copper.

Bananas are naturally free of fat, cholesterol and sodium—a hardy fruit that packs a punch in more ways than one.
